Big day

We are in Shelter Island with Grandma, Grandpa, Steven, Sonya and Clara. Yesterday you took 53 steps without falling. You are really walking now. I'm sad knowing that I will probably only see you crawl a couple more times but I am really proud of how quickly you are learning. Your favorite thing to do is to push the cart with the alphabet blocks around the swimming pool. The other day I followed you around the pool about fifty times while you pushed the cart. When it was time to stop you cried and held onto the cart with all your strength. All this cart pushing has substantially improved your walking.

Darling Stella,

Grandpa and I have had a wonderful time getting to know you these past two weeks on Shelter Island, and especially last week when we were alone with you, Mommy and Daddy. You really liked not having to compete for attention. We doted on you every minute, and you thrived.

You now run rather than walk, and you understand lots of words as you struggle to repeat them and point to the item in question. Words that you recognize are Mommy, Daddy, fan, Grandpa, spoon, more, water and cup. I don't feel slighted that you don't respond to the word, "Grandma" , because you and I have so much fun together, and you know me if not my name. I make you laugh so much when we play "catch me" or "where is Stella?" I call, "Stella, where is Stella" until you show up with your beautiful, sparkly smile, and your twinkly eyes. We are all amazed that at only almost 11 months you are such a fun playmate.

Your appetite is a pleasure. Uncle Steven was thrilled to feed you his oatmeal, which you loved, maybe because he is such a good cook and he had some maple syrup on it, and you noticed a new flavor. Mommy and Daddy are careful to slowly introduce new foods to you, but they probably don't have to be so cautious because you are pretty tough.

That is the thing about you that causes me stress. You love new experiences such as climbing on something you have never climbed on before, and you hate to have me hover over you. I worry that you will fall, and sometimes you do, but mostly you get up and try again on your own. I worry that you will hurt yourself and when you cry I feel sad, and that happens sometimes when one is so committed to trying new things. But I don't like it...

It is fun to give you a bath, and Daddy and I gave you a bath together last Saturday because it is hard for one person to do it alone. You treat the tub like a swimming pool now, loving the water, running back and forth in the tub sliding on the mat and slipping sometimes. Daddy loves it that you seem to be a fierce athlete, determined, and with good coodination.

Mommy dresses you in beautifully coodinated colors, and you look great in casual slacks or dresses. I think your style when you are older, say two, might be slightly understated, a little conservative, but it is too soon to tell while your hair is so short.

Grandpa and I adore you, Stella. Please remember that Grandpa Paul and I will always take care of you the best we can, and that we love you a whole big bunch.

Lots of Hugs and Kisses,
Grandma Helaine and Grandpa Paul
